Argan Virgin Organic Oil
***Argan Virgin Organic Oil – History***
Argan Virgin Organic oil, extracted from the un-roasted kernels of the argan fruit, scientifically known as Argania spinosa, has a deep-rooted history both culturally and economically, especially in Morocco, its native home. The argan tree is endemic to the semi-desert region of southwestern Morocco, particularly between Essaouira and Agadir. It has thrived in this region for millions of years. Indigenous Berber (Amazigh) communities have used argan oil for over 3,000 years, both in cooking and for medicinal and cosmetic purposes.
Traditionally, Berber women would harvest the fruit, dry it, crack the hard shell, and grind the kernels by hand using stone querns. This process is labour-intensive and time-consuming. The introduction of a mechanical technique by several industrial units and women’s cooperatives not only enhanced the quality of oil but also its yield. In the advancement of this process, the utilisation of water for extraction has been discontinued, resulting in the production of two distinct types of argan oil: food grade and cosmetic grade.
Cosmetic argan oil is obtained through cold pressing without roasting the kernels, preserving a lighter aroma and retaining a higher concentration of nutrients for skin and hair care. Conversely, food argan oil is achieved through cold pressing roasted kernels, imparting the oil with a nutty flavour, a rich source of essential fatty acids, vitamin E, and antioxidants. Food argan oil exhibits a copper colour, while cosmetic argan oil is characterised by a golden hue.
During the 1990s and 2000s, as natural and organic beauty trends gained prominence, argan oil gained international recognition, particularly in Europe and North America. This oil earned the nickname “Liquid Gold” due to its luxurious texture and nutrient-rich properties. In 1998, the Arganeraie Biosphere Reserve was established by UNESCO to safeguard the argan forests and promote sustainable development.
***Argan Virgin Organic Oil – Benefits***
Today, Argan Virgin Organic carrier oil is a key ingredient in skincare, haircare (moisturisers, serums, conditioners) and medicinal applications (anti-inflammatory, anti-aging). Argan virgin organic oil possesses deep moisturising properties, effectively hydrating dry, flaky, or sensitive skin without clogging pores (non-comedogenic). Its anti-aging properties contribute to reducing fine lines and wrinkles due to its high antioxidant content.
Additionally, argan virgin organic oil exhibits anti-inflammatory properties, potentially alleviating eczema, psoriasis, and sunburns. It is acne-friendly, as linoleic acid helps regulate sebum production, thereby reducing breakouts. Argan virgin organic oil enhances skin tone, imparting a radiant and healthy glow.
Argan virgin organic oil is widely utilised in hair care, serving as a hair strengthener. It effectively reduces breakage and split ends. It controls frizz, tames flyaways, and leaves hair smooth and lustrous. It moisturises the scalp, potentially reducing dandruff or itchiness. This carrier oil acts as a natural protective barrier against styling tools and sun damage.

⚠️Caution⚠️ While argan virgin organic oil is generally safe and well-tolerated, there are a few important cautions and considerations to keep in mind, especially for people with sensitivities or using it for the first time.
- ***Skin Irritation*** Argan virgin organic carrier oil is considered safe for most people, but it may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals, especially those with sensitive skin. It is best to patch test on a small area (e.g., on the inner arm) before applying to the face or body. It’s safe on most dry or irritated areas, but skip open wounds or raw skin unless guided by a dermatologist. Avoid contact with eyes, inner ears, and sensitive areas.
- ***Pregnancy and Nursing*** Argan virgin organic carrier oil is generally considered safe for pregnant and breastfeeding women, especially when used topically, in moderation, and with careful consideration of potential sensitivities. If blending with essential oils, always research each oil’s safety. If you’re ever unsure, run it by your healthcare provider — especially if you’re using carrier oils on larger skin areas or planning to use them regularly.
- ***Children*** While often used in baby massage, it may affect the skin barrier function in very young infants. Use with care and consult a paediatrician for infants under 6 months. Keep out of reach of children and pets to prevent accidental ingestion or contact.
- ***Internal Use*** While Argan virgin organic oil is commonly used in culinary applications, only the roasted kernels version is used in food — not virgin cosmetic argan oil. Culinary argan oil is roasted and processed differently from cosmetic argan oil. Ingesting this argan virgin organic oil can be toxic and may lead to adverse effects such as vomiting, abdominal pain, and kidney damage. Always use food-grade (roasted kernels) argan oil from reputable sources and consult with a healthcare professional before internal use.
- ***Medical Conditions*** While carrier oils are generally safe, some can potentially exacerbate certain medical conditions or interact with medications, especially when used in large amounts, internally, or on compromised skin. Argan virgin organic oil is unlikely to directly affect blood sugar, but internal use (e.g., in capsules) of certain oils could theoretically interact with diabetes medications or influence insulin sensitivity. If you’re using oils over large skin areas regularly, your liver and kidneys are involved in processing any compounds absorbed. People with impaired function might need to be cautious.
- ***Allergies*** Those with nut allergies should consult their medical practitioner before coming into contact with organ virgin organic oil, nut oils, butters or other nut products. Though rare, some people may experience redness, itching or rash. Always do a patch test (e.g., on the inner arm) before using it on larger areas or the face. Always discontinue use if you experience any signs of an allergic reaction.
***Note*** Although carrier oils have a longstanding history of use and are valued for their potential benefits, individual experiences may vary.
