***Argan Virgin Organic Oil – History***

Argan Virgin Organic oil, extracted from the un-roasted kernels of the argan fruit, scientifically known as Argania spinosa, has a deep-rooted history both culturally and economically, especially in Morocco, its native home. The argan tree is endemic to the semi-desert region of southwestern Morocco, particularly between Essaouira and Agadir. It has thrived in this region for millions of years. Indigenous Berber (Amazigh) communities have used argan oil for over 3,000 years, both in cooking and for medicinal and cosmetic purposes.

Traditionally, Berber women would harvest the fruit, dry it, crack the hard shell, and grind the kernels by hand using stone querns. This process is labour-intensive and time-consuming. The introduction of a mechanical technique by several industrial units and women’s cooperatives not only enhanced the quality of oil but also its yield. In the advancement of this process, the utilisation of water for extraction has been discontinued, resulting in the production of two distinct types of argan oil: food grade and cosmetic grade.

Cosmetic argan oil is obtained through cold pressing without roasting the kernels, preserving a lighter aroma and retaining a higher concentration of nutrients for skin and hair care. Conversely, food argan oil is achieved through cold pressing roasted kernels, imparting the oil with a nutty flavour, a rich source of essential fatty acids, vitamin E, and antioxidants. Food argan oil exhibits a copper colour, while cosmetic argan oil is characterised by a golden hue.

During the 1990s and 2000s, as natural and organic beauty trends gained prominence, argan oil gained international recognition, particularly in Europe and North America. This oil earned the nickname “Liquid Gold” due to its luxurious texture and nutrient-rich properties. In 1998, the Arganeraie Biosphere Reserve was established by UNESCO to safeguard the argan forests and promote sustainable development.

Carrier Oil Dilution Guide (for Essential Oils)

***Essential oils should never be applied directly to the skin without dilution. Carrier oils make them safe to use***

When mixing essential oils with a carrier oil, the percentage of dilution depends on who you're using it for and the purpose.

Here's a simple breakdown:

* 0.25% to 0.5% dilution: Ideal for infants under 2 years old. Use 1 to 2 drops of essential oil per tablespoon (15 mL) of carrier oil.
* 1% dilution: Good for young children (2–6 years), pregnant women, the elderly, or anyone with sensitive skin. Use 3 drops of essential oil per tablespoon of carrier oil.
* 2% to 3% dilution: Standard for daily use by healthy adults, like for skin moisturising or mild therapeutic purposes. Use 6 to 9 drops of essential oil per tablespoon of carrier oil.
* 5% dilution: Used for short-term or localised issues, such as muscle aches or insect bites. Use 15 drops per tablespoon of carrier oil.
* 10% or higher: Typically reserved for spot treatments or specific conditions under professional guidance. Not for regular use.

***Note*** One tablespoon equals about 15 mL, and 1 mL equals about 20 drops (depending on the dropper), so this helps when scaling recipes.
